Now, in Hampshire on the trail of the rural-riding William Cobbett, they take to a hot-air balloon. But then Crane, who suggests a bracing outdoor version of Michael Frayn, is mad about maps.
Starting with the 12th-century account by Gerald of Wales of his trek around his native country, he follows Defoe through Essex and Celia Fiennes through Lancashire before catching up with the 20th-century HV Morton motoring through Scotland to "the most amazing mountain view in Britain". He has brought a wiry energy to the programmes, full of restless enthusiasm, fast talking and fast pedalling, his umbrella poking rakishly out of his rucksack like a question mark. Almost inevitably, there's a tie-in book, and it comes as a considerable surprise.
Far from being a perfunctory rehashing of old scripts, it sets out to celebrate and contextualise the eight journeys with scholarly zeal. Crane gives far more space to his authors' often-intrepid adventures than to his own television-tailored ones. Cannot recommend highly enough. Just fabulous from beginning to end. Everything was just perfect, food service and drinks. The staff went above and beyond very helpful and polite.
The trip was amazing. We have been on the Northern Belle a few times now and every experience is as good as the last. I would highly recommend going on any of the trips if you get the opportunity. The train itself is fantastic and all of the staff are really friendly, with nothing being too much trouble for them.

We are already booking for next year. We were spoiled from start to finish. What a fantastic excursion. Dave and Charlotte looked after us with exemplary service in a beautiful Duart carriage. The entertainment was lovely and the fireworks spectacular. We had a super time on the Northern Belle, we can highly recommend! So nostalgic, what a wonderful time we had!!
From entering the station, to boarding the train, then the perfect experience ever pure pure luxury, amazing food, totally attentive staff, truly truly amazing. What a treat this was, everything was just perfect, the ambience, the food and the service. We were seated with a charming couple, I was apprehensive about this when the tickets came and I found my daughter and I were sharing a table with others.
It was also great fun not knowing where we were going. If you love good food and train travel this should definitely be on your bucket list. Departing: Crewe, Chester Station, Liverpool. Departing: Glasgow, Edinburgh. Departing: Darlington, Durham, Newcastle. Departing: Lincoln, Newark, Grantham.
