The bike trail was beautiful as well as fun. The value was superb. Thank you! I had a wonderful experience on my 1st Road Scholar trip.

Great people, great food, and great accommodations! This was a very enjoyable, well-organized program. The bicycling was not difficult, but substantial parts of the trail are very rough. Several participants who brought their own bikes with narrow, high-pressure tires had flats. I would recommend that participants use the bikes with fat, low-pressure tires that are provided as part of the program. A great bicycling adventure in a beautiful area of our country - the food was well prepared and delicious, the staff was very helpful and accommodating.

The facility was very nice and comfortable. We enjoyed the stay. Carolyn Myers - from Colorado. I have thoroughly enjoyed several Road Scholar trips but this was the first one I joined which was dedicated to biking. While very athletic, I was at the low end of biking experience compared to the other group members. Everyone was very helpful and encouraging and the tour leaders worked hard to make sure everyone enjoyed each day.

The accomodations are basic but for me were comfortable and perfectly adequate.

More Information:

The group meals were always fun and the food was very good and plentiful. This trip is a great way to explore a very beautiful part of the world and an interesting blend of physical activity and cultural experiences. This program is one of the better ones we have attended. It offered a nice variety of activities; not only biking. This program is a wonderful bargain.

I really appreciate how the cost is kept low, but the program is of good quality. The biking was great and expertly organizes the extra activities very interesting and the show at the theater fantastic. The whole group had a great time. Great biking trails, great staff with Road Scholar and the Sundog rental organization, great people on the trip, and great food.

Virginia Creeper Trail – Damascus

This trip exceeded my expectations for the first trip we have taken. And I plan to do more. That said, I did have a flat tire happen on the last 1 mile of trip on the last day unfortunately and would have liked to have ridden that last mile back to Damascus; they came out shortly after someone reported where I was, though.

Gorgeous rides on an old rail trail. Great for the beginner and expert. Rental bikes are very comfortable. The Virginia Creeper Trail was wonderful for biking and not too difficult. The scenery was beautiful and the whole experience was well worth signing up for. Despite the fact that fall rain and threat of flooding decreased our bike riding from 4 to 2 days we got to bike the entire rail to trail Virginia Creeper Trail, which was absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous and was so much fun I could hardly believe it.

My fellow bikers were whip smart, fun, and funny. On our non-biking days our program leaders were resourceful in finding entertaining and very interesting alternative activities for us. The regularly scheduled evening programs that included Barter Theater, Fire in the Kitchen, Abingdon Welcome Center and local crafts, and talk about the Creeper Trail all contributed greatly to our enjoyment and appreciation of this program. Each Road Scholar staff member was super friendly and attentive to detail; I appreciated receiving a detailed itinerary upon that arrival.

To avoid the challenging climb, many visitors to the rail-trail park at Damascus, a lower point on the trail, ferry their bicycles on a shuttle up to Whitetop Station a replica depot and visitor center and coast back down to their cars.

The trail continues on to Abingdon, but this mile eastern leg, managed by the U. Forest Service, is one of its most popular sections. It's the user-friendliness that makes it so popular.
